The Creamery Arts Center boasts one of the best-equipped clay studios on the Western Slope. The studio offers scheduled, ongoing pottery and clay sculpture classes, as well as open studio time for those that wish to work independently.

We offer people throughout the community the opportunity to work with clay in a well equipped and creative environment. The studio provides numerous potters wheels as well as hand tools, a slab roller and clay extruder.

We have a well stocked glaze room, with many unique glazes for participants to explore and develop slips and glazes for their finished work. The studio boasts multiple electric and a Raku kiln. This gives participants the opportunity to explore different firing temperatures and techniques.

Ongoing Scheduled pottery & Sculpture Classes
The studio offers classes in pottery and clay sculpture. Participants can learn how to work with the potters wheel, hand building techniques, methods of sculpting as well as various approaches to decorating and glazing.

Studio Time
For class participants as well as people who want to work independently there is open studio time available. The studio is also available for use by approved outside instructors for classes or work shops they would like to teach.

Workshops and Classes

Tile Making Workshops with Pete Halladay

Third Saturday of each Month 12-4pm

November 15 - Silk Screened Raku Tiles

Learn some of the techniques used in the creation of our famous decorated bathroom. Create your own small mosaic design or mural using wet clay or already bisqued tile. Explore new glazing techniques including underglaze, overglaze and raku to produce many decorative effects. The possibilities are endless!!

Mastering the Wheel

Wednesdays September 10 - November 12 1-3 pm
On-going, drop-in class for students 16+
who have some experience on the potter’s wheel and who want to expand their capabilities. Through a series of fun exercises and projects, students will explore the vast potential of the wheel to build a more developed set of skills for their functional and sculptural projects.
Cost $15 drop in fee or 4 sessions for $56 Materials $25 per 25# of clay (includes clay, glazes and firing)

VISION and After School Clay Classes
Wednesdays, September 10 - November 12 3-5 pm
This class is designed as an introduction to techniques for forming clay objects, using traditional hand building processes and work on the wheel. Emphasis will be on creativity and self-expression. Ages 12 and up.
Cost $84 Materials $25 per 25# of clay (includes clay, glazes and firing)

Evening Clay Classes
10 Wednesdays, September 10 -November 12 6-8 pm
This class is open to students of all levels. Explore hand building and or wheel throwing, as well as a variety of decoration and glaze techniques. We will be working with mid-range firing temperature. Instruction will be guided by student interest.
Cost $140 Materials $25 per 25# of clay (includes clay, glazes and firing)

Handbuilding Techniques and Projects with Mary Jursinovic
Thursdays, 4-6pm
Weekly sessions include demonstration and instruction to complete a piece during each session.

September 4 - Pinch pots and surface design.
September 11 - Slump and Press molds
September 18 - Building with slabs.during class.
September 25 - Coil and Scrape building.
October 2 - Working with colored clays.

October 16-November 13 Mary will work with you do expand on your mastery of hand building skills and techniques.

 
   

Raku Firing
Each month during the gallery opening, the clay department offers participants and the public an opportunity participate in a Raku firing. Look for us out in the yard on the first Friday of the month.If you have never witnessed a raku firing, you are missing a exciting visual treat.

News In the Clay Studio
If you haven’t checked out the Fall Education Catalog, take a look now and sign up for some of the fun and inexpensive workshops we have planned for you. In addition to David’s regular Wednesday clay classes, Mary Jursinovic is teaching hand-building classes every Thursday, and her techniques produce some dynamite effects. Check the catalog or the website for details and call to confirm your class. Pete Halladay is sharing his expertise with tile making on the third Saturday of every month.

David Strong and Daphna Russell are co-teaching a ceramics course for the Delta Montrose Technical College, in the first of many “for credit” courses offered at the Creamery.

Looking for a place to work on your dream ceramics project? The Creamery offers Open Studio hours in the clay studio for a reasonable $25 per month fee. Make an appointment with David to get oriented to the procedures and to learn how you can help out a bit with maintenance and running of the space. Materials are also available for purchase from the Creamery staff.
